COVID-19

COVID-19 is a very contagious disease caused by a virus. Symptoms of COVID-19 can feel like a cold, flu, or pneumonia, but it may also affect other parts of the body. It can cause severe illness and have extreme effects even after the disease has passed. Over a million people have died from COVID-19 in the United States.

Vaccines against COVID-19 are safe and effective. Anyone over the age of 6 months should get the updated 2023-2024 vaccine released in September 2023.

Influenza (Flu)

What we call “the Flu” is a contagious illness caused by any of several types of influenza viruses. The virus infects the respiratory system—the nose, throat, and lungs.

Flu can become severe, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly. It can also make things complicated for people already managing other health conditions. When more people are vaccinated, fewer people get sick.

We recommend that New Haven residents protect themselves and others from the flu by getting the flu vaccine. This is a safe, effective way to have a healthier Fall and Winter.

HPV

HPV is a viral infection that can cause cancer. There is an HPV vaccine that is safe and will prevent this infection. It is FDA-approved for ages 9 and up. The most common age to receive this vaccination is 11-13.

HPV stands for human papillomavirus. Getting the HPV vaccine is recommended for all preteens and teens, regardless of gender. If you are under 26 and have not gotten vaccinated for HPV yet, it’s not too late to be protected.

Meningitis

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.

People of any age can get meningitis. It can spread easily, especially when people are close together daily. For example, teens, college students, and boarding-school students are at higher risk for infection. Meningitis can be treated successfully if treated quickly. It’s important to get your routine vaccinations, know the signs of meningitis, and get medical care right away if you think that you or your child has the illness.

There are two different types of meningitis vaccines that help prevent meningococcal disease.

Meningitis ACWY vaccine, recommended for 11- to 12-year-olds, plus a booster at age 16
Meningitis B vaccine, recommended for adolescents not at increased risk age 12-23 years (preferred age 16-18 years) based on shared clinical decision-making with your healthcare provider
